Jet fuel is some of the most expensive fuel that's available and planes really know how to burn through it. Will that change anytime soon, or will jet fuel be guaranteed to continue being so expensive?
Well the industry is such a big one that it's no surprise that so many people have so much invested in changing the future of jet fuel. And changing it they will.
Flights from Tampa to Boston may soon use green bio fuels that enable us to avoid a reliance on a fossil fuel and instead grow the fuel. It's good news on the whole for farmers. But for the billion or more hungry people in the world, bio fuels are simply another thing which competes farmland and will only further increase the extent to which fuel prices have increased.
But expect jet fuel to change. It will become more efficient and less polluted. We can hope that airlines will lead this drive, and that
flights from Philadelphia to Atlanta will gradually use less and less fuel until a time when it is not such an environmental crime to fly. But don't expect solar planes any time soon. Of course, electric flights may one day become the norm but we're a long way from that point yet.
Right now we've simply got to focus on making existing fuels more efficient, or cutting back a little on the extent to which we fly. After all,
flights from Dallas to Denver use an incredible amount of fuel and it might be better to take ground transportation. New super airlines like the AirBus, when full can be just as economical per person as a hybrid car, but these planes will rarely be full and hybrid cars will give out as much fuel in a year as a single plane trip.
